The 20-Minute “California Patch” for Tenant Doorknob Holes

Doorknob impacts through drywall between tenant tenancies are common. Standard mesh tape sags under pressure; backing wood takes too long. A California patch uses the drywall paper itself as the tape joint.

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Drywall scrap (cut 2 inches larger than the damage)
  • Utility knife and taping knife (6-inch)
  • Setting-type compound (Easy Sand 20)
  • Sanding sponge (medium/fine)

Procedure

  1. Square off the hole in the wall with a drywall saw.
  2. Score the back of your drywall scrap, peel away the gypsum core, leaving a 1-inch paper flange border intact.
  3. Butter the edges of the wall opening with 20-minute mud.
  4. Seat the patch into the hole, embedding the paper flange flat into the mud bed with your taping knife.
  5. Feather the edges tight, let set for 20 minutes, apply a skim coat, and knock down ready for primer.
