Replace a Leaking Moen 1225/1222 Shower Cartridge

Dripping tub spouts and stiff single-handle shower faucets in rental units are almost always worn internal O-rings on Moen brass (1225) or Positemp (1222) cartridges.

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Moen Cartridge Puller tool
  • Replacement cartridge (OEM Moen 1225 or 1222)
  • White vinegar (for dissolving mineral scale)
  • Plumber’s silicone grease
  • Phillips screwdriver and adjustable wrench

Procedure

  1. Shut off the main water supply and relieve line pressure.
  2. Remove handle cap, screw, and decorative escutcheon plate.
  3. Pull the brass retaining clip straight up using needle-nose pliers (do not drop it behind the wall).
  4. Thread the cartridge puller onto the stem, twist to break mineral adhesion, and draw the cartridge straight out.
  5. Flush debris, lubricate the new O-rings with silicone grease, reinsert until flush, reinstall the retaining clip, and restore water.
