There are several ways to update the railing on the deck and some are cheaper than others. Replacing the railing can be time-consuming and may be unnecessary if the area is still in good shape. Instead, update the railing and deck by installing new lattice, solar post caps, and aluminum balusters. This project is perfect for those who consider themselves handy and saves money over railing replacement.
You will need:
• Aluminum balusters
• Solar post caps
• Baluster connectors
• Silicone caulk
• Claw hammer
• Hand saw
• Pry bar
• Power drill with a wood bit
• Exterior-grade construction adhesive
• Finishing nails
• Deck cleaner and scrub brush or power washer
• Deck stain or seal
• Tape measure
Step 1: Clean the deck with the power washer or scrub brush and deck cleaner. Stain or seal the decking.
Step 2: Use the hand saw to saw the existing balusters in half. Remove these, the top rail, and the rail cap.
Step 3: With the tape measure and pencil, measure the positions of the balusters and mark these on the bottom and top rails. Balusters are usually at least four inches apart.
Step 4: Use the drill driver to screw a baluster connector into each mark.
Step 5: Apply the silicone caulk to the outside area of the connector where the baluster will contact the outer edge. Slide the new balusters on the connectors on the bottom rail.
Step 6: Put the top rail over the balusters, ensuring that each baluster seats on a connector. Secure this rail and replace the rail cap.
Step 7: Charge the solar caps. Remove any existing post caps and level the top of the post.
Step 8: Apply adhesive on the inside edge of the new cap molding. Press the solar caps firmly onto the posts. Check for level. If any caps dim, switch them off for at least 48 hours.
Step 9: Sand the posts and bottom and top rails. Stain or paint the posts and rails.
Step 10: Replace the lattice underneath the deck.
