Stumbling around outside in the dark is no fun and it can also be dangerous. Make the backyard safer by adding some lighting that sits in the deck boards. This provides the outdoor seating area with additional ambiance and makes it easier for you to find the dog when it is outside. It costs only about $100 to enhance the deck with inset lighting.
You will need:
Step 1: Inset lighting can be used to distinguish deck steps or provide uplighting to other areas of the space. Three-inch diameter lights should be sufficient for this purpose. Use the tape measure to determine where lighting should go on the deck steps or perimeter.
Step 2: Use the drill and Forstner bit to cut a hole 3 inches in diameter and 7/8 inches deep with a bottom that is flat, not a drilled-through hole. As a guide, mark the 7/8-inch depth on the drill bit with a piece of tape or marker. Keep the drill perpendicular to the work surface and proceed slowly to ensure a proper cut.
Step 3: With the spade or auger bit, drill one 7/8-inch hole through the center of the hole created in Step 2.
Step 4: Install the deck light and snap it into place. The two lead wires should be hooked into the main power wire. Pull wires under your deck and then attach them to the main transformer. Wrap wire connections with electrical tape or use wire caps.
Step 5: Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for each light that is being installed. Test the lighting by turning on the transformer. If desired, use a transformer with a timer to regulate when the lights will illuminate the area.
