Many areas of the country experience very cold temperatures during winter. Whether you are hunting or camping, you must dress warmly and take certain precautions to prevent cold weather health issues. After prolonged exposure to frigid temperatures, body tissues can freeze, resulting in frostbite. Frostbite is one of the worst temperature-related conditions because it can result in permanent damage. Follow these tips to prevent this from happening.
Step 1: Wear mittens instead of gloves because they keep fingers together, allowing these appendages to remain warmer.
Step 2: Wearing several layers of thin clothes is better than wearing a layer or two of thick clothing. Clothes keep warm body-generated air from escaping, so wearing more layers keeps that air near the body, increasing its resistance to the chilly temperatures.
Step 3: Children are more prone to acquiring frostbite because they lose heat more quickly than adults. Dress children in extra layers and do not let them play outside for more than one hour at a time. When they come inside during break periods, they will get warm.
Step 4: When tying boots or shoes before heading outdoors, make sure the laces are not pulled too tight. Footwear that is too tight restricts circulation, which makes a person more susceptible to frostbite. If the outdoor trek will take you over water or snow, wear waterproof footwear so your feet do not get wet.
Step 5: Wear a hat that extends over the ears and nose or put on a ski mask. Frostbite targets these areas, so protect them.
Step 6: When outdoors during precipitation, low temperatures, or high winds, find shelter quickly because these conditions are conducive to frostbite development.
Step 7: Keep clothing dry, including socks, mittens, and headwear. If any items become wet, dry them indoors or put on dry clothing.
Step 8: Do not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes before or during time in the cold outdoors. These habits make the body more susceptible to the frigid temperatures.
