Our Take on New York Wire Fiberglass Screen
Finding the right type of material to replace a screen is often very difficult. The New York Wire Fiberglass Screen seems to be the solution to many homeowners’ problems, promising a screen material that will not dent, crease, or unravel as well as being easy to install. After ordering the New York Wire Fiberglass Screen it arrived in a 48” inch by 84” roll, perfect for one large application like replacing the screen in a storm door or a few smaller projects such as windows. Some retailers also offer a number of different sizes.
We used the New York Wire Fiberglass Screen to replace a worn out screen in a storm door. After removing the old screen, measuring and cutting the new screen, it was ready to be installed. As anyone who has replaced screen before can tell you, replacing a screen and installing it is much more of an art than a science, but installing the New York Wire Fiberglass Screen was not any more difficult to install than other screens we have used for replacement in the past (just make sure you have the proper tools for the job).
Once the screen was installed, it looked great – even with the finagling of installation the screen did not show any marks of distress, such as dents or creases. The main reason this screen was purchased was to fix weather and pet damage that had occurred to the previous screen. After several months, the screen had held up very well to multiple “attacks” by the cat, far better than the metal screen that was there prior (one “screen climb” by the cat and there were obvious markings and cuts on the metal screens we used prior).
Another positive aspect of this particular screening is that it holds up great against adverse weather conditions. I live in a home about a block off the ocean and we see more than our fair share of bad weather during the winter months. With previous screen, one winter and they would be about as brittle as a stale piece of bread. This screening was completely unaffected by the weather and looks like it will last for several years (assuming it continues to hold up to the cat!).
The one recommendation we would make when cutting this screening is to use a very sharp pair of sheers in addition to a newly bladed utility knife. The material is thick, so you may need a bit more elbow grease to get through it. Other than that, this is a very solid product at a great price.
