When movement occurs within the range of a motion detector light, illumination is triggered. These systems provide outdoor light at night and improve safety by deterring intruders. They also reduce electricity consumption because the lights turn on only when needed. An easy way to add motion detection lighting outdoors is to replace an existing light fixture.
You will need:
Step 1: Turn off power to the existing light fixture at the relevant circuit breaker. Use the voltage tester to verify that the power is off.
Step 2: Open up your stepladder and position it under the existing light fixture. Climb the ladder and unscrew the light bulbs from this fixture.
Step 3: Remove the mounting bolts securing the lighting fixture to the electrical junction box, using your screwdriver.
Step 4: Disconnect each wire that runs from the electrical junction box to the light mount. Do this by twisting off the plastic wire caps that connect the wires and untangling these wires.
Step 5: Use the wire strippers to cut end of junction box wires. Strip ¼-inch of insulation from wire ends. This allows enough contact room for the junction box wires to connect with wires on the new lighting fixture.
Step 6: Connect junction box wires with wires on the motion-detecting fixture, using the plastic wire connectors. White wires connect to white wires and black wires connect to black wires.
Step 7: Connect the green or copper wire that runs from the junction box, attaching it to the screw in the new light fixture. This screw is typically painted blue or green and is called the ground wire mount screw.
Step 8: Insert the electrical wires into the electrical junction box. Use your screwdriver and the mounting screws included in the light kit to attach your new light fixture to the junction box.
Step 9: Screw a light bulb into each light socket of the motion-detecting fixture.
Step 10: Adjust the fixture sensitivity setting and aim the motion detector, using the instructions for the light kit as your guide.
Step 11: Turn the light fixture circuit breaker on and test the light by flipping the light switch to the on position.
