It is no secret that the country is in a recession and this situation affects businesses just as much as it does individuals. Companies face lower profits and higher bills each month and they struggle to make ends meet. Here are a few easy ways you can save your company money so the financial situation will not become so dire that layoffs are required.
Step 1: Use local sources for products and services. This cuts down on shipping costs and business delays due to waiting for products to arrive. Companies that purchase food products also benefit by receiving the freshest items, not those that have traveled cross-country for days on a truck. Not only does this practice save a company money, it injects funds into the local economy, which has indirect benefits for an organization. It is also environmentally friendly because fewer fossil fuels are used in transportation. There is often the potential for small local companies to barter with each other for products or services.
Step 2: Conserve resources to cut down on expenses. Water coolers heat and refrigerate water, both unnecessary and expensive functions. A bottled water service is expensive and consumes plastic, adds transportation costs, and increases vehicle pollutants. Drinking tap or filtered water and heating water using a coffeemaker or microwave are less expensive alternatives. Often, the cost of tap water is paid for by the building owners.
Step 3: At the end of the day, shut down appliances and equipment, turn off the electricity, and adjust the thermostat. There is no point to heat or cool an area while there are no inhabitants. The same holds true for providing power to run lighting, kitchen appliances, and computers. Some companies get all employees involved in the process, developing a contest out of reducing the energy bills. A portion of the money saved can be used toward a celebratory lunch or paid to the employees as a bonus.
Step 4: Recycle paper by using double-sided printing. If a double-sided printing feature is not available on current equipment, place leftover paper in a second tray and use it to print draft documents.
