The job market is tough right now and if you are home from school for the summer or have recently been laid off, you are competing with recent graduates for open positions. If you have sent out loads of resumes and received no responses, consider a different approach. Here are some ways to make money during the summer without being hired.
Step 1: Recycle cans, bottles, and paper. Though this might seem old-fashioned, it can make you some serious cash. Some recycling centers accept all kinds of metal, including holiday lights and extension cords. Prices are usually quoted by the pound and about 32 to 42 cans equal one pound. While you might be tempted to roll in the keg from last night’s party, this is illegal in some states.
Step 2: Sell your body…well, not literally…sell what your body makes naturally. Some companies will pay you for donating plasma or blood. Donors must undergo pre-screening for various blood illnesses and also have a physical exam. FDA regulations stipulate that plasma cannot be donated more than once every two days and no more frequently than twice per week. If you live in the UK or want to head there, you can become a subject of medical studies or clinical trials. The requirements and payment amounts vary depending on the study and the number of times a person participates. There are even some places in which you can sell your hair!
Step 3: Become your own boss by starting a dog walking, babysitting, or odd job business. If you live near the beach, buy ice cream bars and water ice and sell them for a profit to beachgoers but be aware of licensing requirements.
Step 4: Use eBay, Craigslist, and other online classified sites to sell items you no longer want. Purchase items at low prices and re-sell them for a profit. Go through your jewelry box, gathering broken, mismatched, and unwanted gold and silver jewelry. Sell it to a jeweler or cash for gold dealer.
