Whether you are sick or in the middle of the woods without access to running water, there are times when you will need to clean your hair without using water. Packing the right ingredients will rid the hair of oil without doing a traditional shampoo, making it appear fresh and clean. No one will ever know that you haven’t washed it for several days.
Step 1: Apply one cup of dry, uncooked oats to the hair and work it through with the fingers. The oats absorb sebum oil contained in strands of hair. Brush out the oats and the hair will appear clean.
Step 2: Work ¼ cup of corn starch into the hair and then brush it out.
Step 3: Take a handful of flour, work it through the hair, and brush it out. This dry shampoo technique was used by early settlers.
Step 4: Sprinkle some baby powder onto the scalp and work it through the hair. Brush it out and your hair will be oil-free.
Step 5: Purchase an over-the-counter dry shampoo product. Many of these are white powder but some, like the product from Bumble and Bumble, are aerosol sprays that come in different colors to match the hair color. Wear gloves when using these because the dye may come off on the hands.
Step 6: About six weeks before leaving on a camping trip, begin washing the hair with conditioner only. Thoroughly rub the product into the scalp and leave it on the hair for ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse out, do a second application, then rinse that out. Your hair will require less frequent washing.
Step 7: Use a no-rinse shampoo such as No-Rinse. Work it into the hair and it will foam. Wipe off the foam with a towel and the hair will be clean.
