For many families, tradition is a big part of Christmas. Whether they make a special cookie, decorate the tree on Christmas Eve, or go caroling, families enjoy doing certain events year after year. This year, start some Christmas traditions that future generations can carry on to celebrate the season. These are fun ways for everyone to get into the Christmas spirit.
Step 1: Make the countdown to Christmas an event by using an advent calendar. This tradition has its roots in the early 19th century, when people would place a chalk line on the front door to count down the number of December days until Christmas Eve. Instead, you can create a calendar with 24 compartments, each containing a small present or treat to be enjoyed on that day.
Step 2: Find a special Christmas ornament and give it to other family members. An ornament that represents a meaningful moment or milestone of this year will be cherished forever. Fruits and nuts represented the first Christmas ornaments, used to decorate Christmas trees during the 1800s. There are now ornaments for nearly every occasion, from a new baby to an anniversary.
Step 3: Christmas greetings started in Victorian England and continue to this day. Send a Christmas letter to friends and family, using special holiday stationary and scanning in family photos to include in the greeting.
Step 4: Turn Christmas tree decoration into an event by hosting a tree trimming party. Put out some appetizers, treats, and warm beverages and ask each guest to bring an ornament to decorate the tree. Dress in holiday attire, play Christmas music, and enjoy the day.
Step 5: Give the fireplace mantel some flair by hanging Christmas stockings. As legend goes, St. Nick threw sacks of gold into the stockings that were drying by the fire in the home of a widowed nobleman. The gifts were sufficient dowries for his three daughters to marry.
Step 6: Decorate the outside of the home with Christmas lights to make the area sparkle. Small, white candles were initially used to light outdoor trees. The string of electric light bulbs was invented in 1882 and used to decorate the White House in 1895.
