It is important to care for yard equipment including a riding mower. Recommended maintenance includes replacing mower blades when they become damaged or worn. This is a project that you can safely and easily do yourself if you will follow the instructions below.
You will need:
Step 1: Read the information provided by the riding mower manufacturer to determine the correct replacement blades. Order these from a replacement part distributor or dealer or directly from the manufacturer.
Step 2: Lay the blanket or tarp on a flat work surface. Bring the riding mower to this area, turn it off, and apply the parking brake. Remove the battery from the mower to prevent the equipment from starting accidentally.
Step 3: Place scrap lumber under the rear and front of the riding mower deck. Lower the deck to the floor using the deck lever. Unscrew the clipping bag and other attachments from the deck. Release the deck fasteners in the front and rear of the area. Raise the deck and remove scrap lumber. Put on the work gloves and carefully pull the deck out from under the mower.
Step 4: Wedge lumber between the deck cover and mower blades. Turn over the deck and remove the blade drive belt. Remove the large bolt holding the blades to the blade shaft, using the socket wrench. Set aside the removed washers and bolt in the order they were removed.
Step 5: Use the rags to wipe dirt and grass from the deck and its cover. Look for indications of rust and remove rust spots with the wire brush.
Step 6: Refer to the mowers owner manual regarding correct blade placement. The sharp side of the blades should face down when the mower is in the upright position. Insert the bolts and washers in the proper order, using fingers to tighten bolts. Wedge scrap lumber between the blades and deck cover to hold blades still. Use the torque wrench to tighten installed bolts to the correct tension. If a torque wrench is not available, you can use a socket wrench, tightening bolts until washers are flat and then an additional 1/8 of a circle.
Step 7: Reattach the mower blade drive belt. Refasten the mower deck to the mower. Turn the mower so it is upright. Reinstall the mower battery. Release the parking brake and push the mower onto the lawn. Start the mower to verify proper operation of the new blades.
