You have just finished painting a room and you are pleased with the results. During cleanup, you notice that some paint has spilled onto the carpet. Even the most careful do-it-yourselfers can sometimes have accidents. A paint spill is a dreaded situation because it can become permanent if the proper removal technique is not used. Follow the instructions below to remove spilled paint from your carpet, leaving the area looking as good as new.
You will need:
Step 1: The removal method used depends on the type of paint that spilled. For oil-based stains, mineral spirits, an organic cleaning solvent similar to turpentine, should be used. For water-based stains, warm water and dish detergent are needed. Never use bleach to remove paint stains because it can also remove color from carpets.
Step 2: Use a white towel to remove excess paint from the carpet, working from the outside of the spill into its center.
Step 3: If the paint is water-based, add warm water and dish detergent to the bowl, mixing the solution to create soapy water. Dip the towel into the solution and use it to apply the solution to the stain, blotting the area. Repeat until the paint is dissolved and no longer appears on carpet fibers. Rinse the carpet area with clean water and dry it with a clean towel.
Step 4: If the paint is oil-based, dip the towel into the mineral spirits and then use it to blot the stained area of the carpet. Repeat this until all the paint is lifted from the carpet. Then, follow Step 2 to clean the area with warm soapy water, rinse it with clean water, and blot it dry with a clean towel.
Step 5: To prevent paint from spilling on carpets during future painting projects, cover carpets with plastic shower curtains or sheeting.
