Updating the bathroom does not need to be expensive or time-consuming. Give the bathroom a fresh new look simply by updating the light fixture. This project is easy and costs under $50 to do. Guests will immediately notice the difference but may think you remodeled the entire room. Keep it your secret and they will never know how little you spent to update the look.
You will need:
Step 1: At the main electric panel, shut off the electrical circuit that powers the bathroom lighting fixture. Remove the light bulb and the cover for the old fixture. Detach the base of the fixture from the wall.
Step 2: Ensure that the power is off by checking the wiring with a circuit tester. Disconnect each wire from the light fixture and remove the fixture from the wall completely.
Step 3: If the fixture was mounted to the wall without a junction box, one must be installed to maintain compliance with current building codes. There are several types of junction boxes and a push-box or drywall-mount with mounting clamps is an easy type to install.
Select the wall location for the new light fixture. Mark this with the pencil. Put the junction box over the exit hole for the original wiring so the new fixture will cover the box. Mark the opening, using the box as your template.
Step 4: Cut the box opening, using the drywall saw.
Step 5: Pull the electrical wires into the box. Use a box clamp to secure the wiring. Push the junction box into the wall opening. Tighten the mounting clam screws.
Step 6: Attach the mounting bracket to the junction box.
Step 7: Connect the electrical wires to the new light fixture by attaching black wires to black wires and white wires to white wires. Use the wire nuts to secure the connections.
Step 8: Press the electrical wires into the installed junction box. Attach the new light fixture to the mounting bracket.
Step 9: Insert light bulbs and included light covers or shades.
Step 10: Turn on the circuit breaker that powers the light fixture. Turn on the light switch to ensure that the light operates properly.
