The crown molding located between the ceiling and walls of a room is an important finishing touch. If the ceiling must be repaired or replaced, the crown molding must be removed and reinstalled. This project is relatively easy and costs about $50 to $100. Save yourself the time, money, and inconvenience of calling a professional contractor and follow the steps below to repair your crown molding.
You will need:
• Crown molding
• Drywall compound
• Paint removal paper
• Paint stripper
• Mineral stripper
• Scoring tool
• Putty knife
• Rubber spatula
• Pry bar
• Scouring pad
• Wire brush
• Drop cloth
• Rubber gloves
• Safety glasses
Step 1: Put the drop cloth down on the floor of the room. Use the scissors to cut the paint removal paper into strips. Each strip should be long enough to cover a two-foot section of molding.
Step 2: Tape the strips of paper to the wall under the crown molding, with the label side of the paper facing you.
Step 3: Put on the safety glasses and gloves. Apply paint stripper to the crown molding with the rubber spatula.
Step 4: Fold the paper up onto the crown molding, pressing it against the molding firmly so it will adhere. Tape the paper in place and let the paper sit for 12 hours.
Step 5: Remove paper strips by pulling one section back at a time so the stripping material will not dry before the paper is removed. Scrape off residue from the top and bottom of the crown molding with the putty knife.
Step 6: Use a sponge dipped in warm, soapy water to wipe down the molding. Remove remaining paint with the scouring pad and wire brush, being careful to scrub with the wood grain to prevent scratching.
Step 7: Remove residue from the paint stripper by wiping the molding with a cloth dipped in mineral stripper.
Step 8: If you must remove old molding that is painted, score the bottom and top with the scoring tool so extra paint will not pull off when the molding is removed. Gently loosen the old molding with the hammer and pry bar.
Step 9: Install new molding and paint or stain all molding to complement the room.
