So, you were just invited on your first camping trip and have no idea what to pack. The wilderness will not supply much so it is important to be prepared. There is usually nowhere to purchase forgotten items so follow these tips to make sure you take everything you may need. By the time you have a few camping trips under your belt, you will be packing with your eyes closed!
You will need:
• Sleeping bag
• Extra blankets
• Cook stove
• Cups, plates, bowls, utensils, and napkins
• Battery-operated lights
• Battery-operated radio
• Extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Small and medium-sized nylon bags
• Large water bladder
• Water purification tablets
Step 1: Establish a staging area like the corner of the garage. Pile the gear there as you purchase it or take it out of the closet.
Step 2: Create a checklist for what is needed. Include a tent, sleeping bag, pillow, extra blankets, cook stove, food, beverages, battery-operated lights and a radio, a lighter, and a first aid kit.
Step 3: Pack clothing, including layers and spare clothes in case some clothing gets wet. Unless the temperatures will be warm, avoid cotton clothes because they dry slowly and do not provide insulation when wet. Include a fleece or wool hat, gloves, synthetic long underwear, and a jacket.
Step 4: Learn how to operate the camp stove and other gear. Be sure to bring enough fuel for the stove.
Step 5: Purchase a few small and medium-sized nylon bags. Pack gear into these, using one bag for cooking gear, another for first aid supplies, and another for camping tools.
Step 6: If water will be in limited supply, pack water purification tablets and a large water bladder. The bladder hose allows for drinking while moving, keeping you hydrated on a long hike.
