There are ways to make the most of your Christmas that do not require you to spend a lot of money. Put aside the urge to outdo the Joneses and instead follow these steps to make this your most memorable Christmas yet, on even the smallest budget.
Step 1: Spend Christmas with your family and friends. If everyone is not local, offer to host the festivities at your house and have them fly or drive to you. If this is not possible, use the wonder of technology to bring everyone closer together. Arrange a Christmas morning phone call or Webcam conversation that includes far-away loved ones. Being there digitally is better than not being there at all!
Step 2: Take pictures to capture the memories. This is especially important if you have young or elderly family members. Few things compare to capturing the wonder in a little one’s eye as he or she opens gifts from Santa. Children grow quickly from one year to the next, so memorialize each celebration. The very elderly may not be around to celebrate another Christmas so make a point to take some photos to look back on after they are gone.
Step 3: Start a new tradition. The holidays are all about traditions, so create a new one for the family. This can be as inexpensive as stringing popcorn garland or wearing coordinating outfits. You can even opt for a no-cost tradition of writing each other Christmas messages. As a family you could also pick a charity to donate to or make a gift basket to someone who needs food or something in particular that you know about.
Step 4: Be generous without breaking the bank. Christmas is about giving but in the end, it is the thought, not something material, that counts. Keep the office work in the briefcase and spend the morning preparing breakfast or playing outside with the children. Be more patient, express your feelings, and show extra understanding. A little bit of effort will go a long way and will be remembered.
