When summertime comes, your children are probably always hankering for ice cream. Taking them to the ice cream shop becomes expensive. Even buying ice cream from the store can start to weigh on the budget. Here is a fun and easy way to turn common ingredients into delicious ice cream without the need to purchase an ice cream maker. Kids can turn this into a game!
To make one pint (8 scoops) of ice cream, you will need:
• 1 pint half-and-half
• 1 ½ cups rock salt, sea salt, or kosher salt
• 1/3 cup granulated sugar
• 10 cups ice
• 4 tablespoons instant pudding mix (choose a flavor children will like)
• 1-pound lidded coffee can, empty and clean
• 3-pound lidded coffee can, empty and clean
• Duct tape
• Medium bowl
• Chips, nuts, or fruit pieces (optional)
Step 1: Combine the pudding mix, sugar, and half-and-half in the bowl, whisking until mixed thoroughly.
Step 2: Pour the mixture into the 1-pound can, put the lid on the can, and seal it with duct tape.
Step 3: Place the 1-pound can inside the 3-pound can. Add 5 cups of ice, followed by ¾ cup salt, to the space between the smaller and larger cans. Place the lid on the 3-pound can and seal it with duct tape.
Step 4: Let children roll the can around on its side for approximately ten minutes. Open the cans and use the spatula to scrape the sides of the small can and stir the contents. Place the lid back on the small can and reseal with duct tape. You can mix in chips, nuts, fruit, or other ingredients, if desired.
Step 5: Discard the water and ice from the 3-pound can. Repeat Step 3.
Step 6: Let the children roll the large can around on its side for an additional 10 minutes.
Step 7: Open the cans and serve the ice cream.
