Step One: Find your ingredients. A trip to the local store should supplement your pantry items. Fresh cherries may be hard to find in certain seasons, but they make the recipe much more delicious. You will need to pit the cherries but it is not difficult. Using a small paring knife, split each cherry in half and pull out the seed.
Step Two: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Let a bit of the butter melt in a nine by thirteen inch baking pan while the oven is heating. This will keep the cobbler from sticking to the pan and making clean-up a nightmare. Remove when the butter has melted.
Step Three: Mix one cup sugar, one cup flour, and one teaspoon baking powder in a bowl. Slowly add in one cup of milk, mixing as you do, until it is all well-blended. Pour this batter into the nine by thirteen pan.
Step Four: Place two cups of rinsed cherries into a bowl. Add in another ¾ cup sugar and another cup of flour. Toss the bowl gently to distribute the flour and sugar. Do not stir, this will damage the cherries.
Step Five: Add the cherry mixture into the batter. Do not stir; the cherries will sink on their own.
Step Six: Place in the preheated over and let heat for fifty or sixty minutes. The top of the cobbler should be golden brown when it is ready. Stick a toothpick into the middle of the dish and if it comes out clean than you know it is sufficiently cooked.
Step Seven: Scoop out the cherries and batter mixture into bowls. Top with a scoop or two of your favorite vanilla ice cream and serve. The dish is best right from the oven because it is still hot.
