Humans are not the only ones who need a comfortable place to sleep. Dogs enjoy lounging in the sun and snoozing the day away. Keeping them off the furniture and valuable rugs is often difficult, which leads the décor to look rather worn. By making a soft dog bed for your pooch, you can keep the furnishings looking new and allow the pup to rest in comfort.
You will need:
Step 1: When the dog is lying down, use the tape measure to take a length measurement of the animal. Add enough room on each side for comfortable sleeping. For example, a measurement of approximately 3.5 feet is typical for a dog who is Golden Retriever-sized.
Step 2: Measure the fabric using the measurement taken in Step 1. Use a different color or material for the top of the bed, if you wish. Cut each piece of fabric to the same length.
Step 3: Fold the batting so it is four layers thick. Cut it two inches shorter than the length and width of the fabric.
Step 4: Pin the fabric with the right sides facing each other. Insert the pins 1.5 inches away from the edge of the fabric. Do this on three sides, leaving the remaining side open.
Step 5: Sew the fabric together, following the rows of pins to create the seams. Sew all three sides.
Step 6: Use the scissors to make a small cut at each corner of the fabric. The cut should be near but not through a seam.
Step 7: Turn the fabric so the right side is facing out. Roll the batting up and insert it into the open side of the bed. Once all batting is inside the bed, unroll and smooth it.
Step 8: On the open side of the bed, fold the upper and lower fabric under and pin these together. Insert the pins as close to the bed edge as possible.
Step 9: Use the sewing machine to stitch this fabric together. Keep all stitches as close to the edge as possible.
Step 10: On the last inch of the seam, back-tack to reinforce the stitches.
