Having a child in his or her senior year of high school is both exciting and terrifying for a parent. Your baby is about to be an adult and take the next big step in life. However, they are still relying on mom and dad financially. With the cost of college tuition being so expensive, even for smaller schools, many parents are forced to tighten the belt or simply tell their kids they cannot afford to send them to their dream college.
As a parent, you hope to be able to have enough put away to send your child to the best school to which they are accepted. But what are you supposed to do when a single year of tuition exceeds the money you have put away in the college fund? The answer is in finding scholarships that will give you free money to put towards the education. Going into your search, know there is no scholarship too small to pursue.
The first place to start is with the high school guidance counselor. They will have access to general scholarships that are available to all students. This is a great place to start and will help get the ball rolling. Go through the list and fill out applications for every scholarship for which your child is qualified. You will end up getting more no’s than yes’, but every yes means free money!
Private organizations will also have scholarship funds available. Maybe your local Sons of Italy has a small scholarship for a local child. Check with the Chamber of Commerce to see which businesses are offering scholarships for college students. You should also check with our own place of employment to see if they have any programs available.
Last, but certainly not least, check with the schools your child is interested in attending. Most of them have programs where the child can earn scholarship money during their college career. For instance, RA’s are often granted a small scholarship each year they serve in this role. Sports programs will generally offer some type of scholarship or grant for qualifying athletes.
