Sunny skies and warm temperatures cause many people to feel more social in the summer. You are bound to have some unexpected guests this summer so do not be caught off guard. Here are some tips for entertaining friends and family members who stop by uninvited. They will think you have been preparing for them all day!
Tip 1: Have some beverages on hand such as wine and iced tea. Organize wine into colored drink buckets, using white buckets for white wine and red buckets for red wine. Keep things cool by chilling bottles of fruity, light-bodied red wines like Lambrusco, Sicilian Cersasuolo, and Spanish Rioja.
Tip 2: Alcoholic drinks require accompaniments like olives, cocktail onions, capers, and citrus wedges. Place these in individual serving bowls and give each a fork or set of tongs. Set out on a platter with an ice bucket so guests can help themselves.
Tip 3: Make everyday snacks look lavish by serving them in silver or crystal bowls and containers. Pour a bag of chips into a large punch bowl and serve dip in a smaller bowl. Add frilly toothpicks to olives to make them look special. Pour different types of nuts into individual bowls so guests can pick their favorites.
Tip 4: No gathering is complete without some sweets so turn Neapolitan ice cream into a fancy dessert. Cut the carton away from the ice cream and refreeze ice cream on a platter until it has hardened. Melt semisweet chocolate, cool it slightly, and pour it over the top of the ice cream, allowing it to drip down all sides. Refreeze the ice cream until the chocolate topping sets. Add crushed candy bar pieces, chocolate candies, or chocolate bits to the top of the ice cream and on each side of the platter.
