Adding Decorative Paint to a Concrete Floor
Laundry rooms and sink rooms are often the most neglected areas of a home. Guests rarely see them and homeowners are generally only in these rooms to do specific tasks. But just because these rooms are lightly used does not mean they should have to look abandoned! Here is a simple, inexpensive way to spruce up your laundry room – so much so you may even enjoy doing laundry in it!
Materials and Tools for Painting a Laundry Room Floor:
Directions for Painting a Laundry Room Floor:
1. Plan Your Design: First, begin by determining what design is desired for the floor. For this example, we will be using an even grid pattern. Start by taping off the baseboards of the wall to protect them from the concrete overlay and stain. Then, using the chalk line, mark out 2’ by 2’ squares, starting in the middle of the floor. Once all the marks have been made, lay tape down in one direction. Then add tape in the other direction so the pieces overlap.
2. Prepare the Concrete Overlay: Mix the concrete overlay following the product’s directions. It is important to follow the directions closely in order for the material to remain smooth and apply easily. Thoroughly mix the concrete overlay with the paddle bit, allow to rest between mixes, in order to obtain the proper texture.
3. Apply the Concrete Overlay: Apply the concrete overlay but using the hopper spray gun. Spray the overlay slowly and evening across the entirety of the floor. This will leave a speckled patter on the concrete. Next, spray concrete stain in a different color using the same technique over the entire floor. This will help to fill in any bare spots and give a two-toned design. Allow the overlay and stain to set overnight or for a full 24 hours.
4. Finish and Enjoy: Once the floor is completely dry, remove the tape outline starting with the tape that is on top of the floor pattern then the tape on the bottom. Once the tape has been removed, paint the floor with a concrete sealer to protect it from foot traffic and other wear and tear. Once the sealer is completely dry (refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for dry time) remove the tape that is protecting the baseboards of the wall. Decorate the room as desired and enjoy!
