Owning a home is a huge investment of both time and money. A well-maintained home is a source of pride, but it requires a lot of ongoing work. Here are some quick home improvements that will add value to your home:
Install an upstairs bathroom fan/vent and light
You will need:
Step 1: Turn the power off at the breaker. Remove the existing light fixture.
Step 2: Go into the attic and find a spot away from wiring, joists, and pipes. Insert a screwdriver through the ceiling to the center of the location. Do this in two different spots approximately one foot apart.
Step 3: Go into the bathroom and draw a line connecting the two holes using a level.
Step 4: Use the vent as a template and mark the area to be cut out of the ceiling.
Step 5: Cut the opening in the ceiling using a reciprocating saw.
Step 6: Go up to the attic and screw the fan housing in place by anchoring it to the joists.
Step 7: Connect the light and fan housing supply wires. Start with the ground wires, then connect the white common wires, then the black and red supply wires.
Step 8: Plug the light in the outlet and connect the light housing.
Step 9: A double switch should be used to control the light and fan. Connect the red wire to the fan control switch.
Step 10: Attach a flexible duct to the housing adapter and the vent.
Step 11: Attach the light fixture to the wall.
Improve the yard using flowers and plants
You will need:
- Plastic, concrete, or wood border material
- Annual or perennial plants or flowers
- Garden rake
- Plant food
Step 1: Determine the area that will be improved. Clear out all debris such as weeds, dead leaves, or branches.
Step 2: Rotate the soil using a garden rake.
Step 3: Map out the placement of the plants and flowers. Use the trowel to dig holes where each item will be placed. Plant the flowers and plants in the holes and tamp down the soil using your hands and the trowel.
Step 4: Cover the entire area of soil with mulch. Treat each plant and flower with water and plant food as directed on the plant food instructions.
Step 5: Insert the border around the area.
Step 6: Continue these steps throughout the yard as desired.
