DIY Craft Ideas for Everyone
If the creative bug has bitten, it is time for some do-it-yourself projects. Crafts are the perfect DIY projects because they are fun and do not require expensive supplies or equipment. There are projects for all ages and interests, letting everyone create homemade masterpieces. DIY projects also save money, making them the perfect solutions when décor or gifts are needed but the budget is slim.
Where to Look for DIY Craft Ideas
The library and the Internet are the perfect sources of ideas for these projects. Even the smallest library should have at least one book or magazine devoted to DIY crafts. Flip through the pages to get some ideas or jump online and do a search. The social network Pinterest is a great resource for linked images of DIY crafts. Seeing the beautiful results before getting started is enough inspiration for many people!
Craft stores also offer an abundance of ideas. Retailers include project idea cards on shelf displays and hold classes for making popular seasonal crafts. Take a class to learn the basics and then refine these to create improved versions of the projects. Learning how to make a gingerbread house is fun but getting the entire family involved in a DIY gingerbread village is even more exciting.
Craft Projects for Kids
DIY crafts are the perfect projects for rainy or snowy days or when kids have too much time on their hands during summer break. Look for projects that correspond to the season such as wax-pressed leaf tracings during fall, DIY holiday ornaments for the holidays, decorated eggs for Easter, and sand art during summer. Children will love creating something that is “their own” and will proudly display it at home or school.
Always tailor projects to the age of the child. Young children have difficulty holding and manipulating small instruments and they should not be exposed to sharp objects like scissors or knives. If they want to try a project that their big brothers or sisters or working on, provide assistance with the dangerous portions so their safety is not at risk.
Many adults enjoy doing crafts with their children because it provides some bonding time. Kids will love helping their mothers create braided potholders or rugs or helping their dads to make toolboxes or shelves for the garage. Ask children what they want to make and build DIY project time into the weekly schedule for fun family interaction.
