Becoming a parent is exciting and it requires many adjustments to one’s life. One of these is adapting the home to be baby-friendly. Accidents are the number one fatality cause for children. Here are ways to childproof the home to prevent any from occurring. A home should be childproofed before the infant gains mobility (about six months old).
You will need:
- Electrical outlet covers
- Childproof latches for cabinets
- Window guards
- Stair gates
- Soft guards for furniture
- Carbon monoxide detectors
- Smoke detectors
- Fire extinguishers
- Flame retardant sleepwear
- Wall anchors
- Nonskid backing for rug
- Self-closing, self-latching gate for swimming pool
- Childproof swimming pool cover
Step 1: Use covers for electrical outlets. Install childproof latches on cabinets.
Step 2: Keep medicine, chemicals, and household cleaners out of a child’s reach. Store these in the original containers with child-resistant caps. If the container did not come with such a cap, buy one and use it. Keep the number of the Poison Control Center handy.
Step 3: Adjust the hot water heater temperature to between 120 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit. This will prevent scalding burns.
Step 4: Use window guards and stair gates.
Step 5: Install soft guards on sharp edges of furniture or remove the furniture from rooms in which baby plays.
Step 6: Install carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors. Have a fire extinguisher on each floor of the home.
Step 7: Dress baby in flame retardant sleepwear.
Step 8: Install a wall anchor to secure the refrigerator, stove, washer, dryer, and any large furniture pieces that may tip.
Step 9: Keep breakable items, small toys, and other items that can be choking hazards out of baby’s reach.
Step 10: Tack down carpets sufficiently and install a nonskid backing on rugs
Step 11: Tie appliance, curtain, and blind cords and store them out of a child’s reach.
Step 12: Enclose a swimming pool with a fence that has a gate that self-closes and self-latches. Install a childproof swimming pool cover when the pool is closed for the season.
