A wall-mounted shelf provides storage and display areas for books, knick-knacks, and even a small flat-panel television. Even a beginner can complete this project in one weekend, creating a sturdy and versatile shelf that can be hung anywhere in the home. Shelf dimensions are 48 x 9 ¼ x 11 ½ inches and this project costs under $70.
You will need:
• Two 1”x10”x6’ boards (pine preferred)
• Two 8-inch corner brackets
• Miter or table saw
• Random-orbit sander
• 120-grit sanding discs
• Drill bits
• Three 8-packs of #8 x 1 1/2-inch flathead wood screws
• Countersink for #8 screws
• 18-pack of #6 x 5/8-inch flathead wood screws
• Wall anchors
• Wood filler
• Wood glue
• Tape measure
Step 1: Measure and carefully cut one 48-inch long board and two 10-inch long boards from each 6-foot board, using the saw. The longer lengths will serve as the top and bottom portions and the shorter lengths will create the sides and shelf partitions.
Step 2: Measure the locations for the two partitions and mark these spots on the inside faces of the bottom and top boards. Assemble the top, sides, and partitions using the clamps.
Step 3: Use the drill to create two countersunk pilot holes on each joint. Unclamp all parts of the shelf.
Step 4: Sand the faces of each board with the sander and sanding discs. Screw the corner braces to the underside of the top board, placing them one inch from both ends. Glue the bottom and top to the partitions and sides, clamping them as you work. Use countersunk screws to reinforce the attachment.
Step 5: Use wood filler to cover the heads of the screws. Let the filler dry and sand the edges and surfaces until they are smooth.
Step 6: Apply a coat of primer, let it dry, and sand it until smooth. Apply two coats of paint, letting the paint dry after each application.
Step 7: Use the level to mark the locations for the mounting holes on the wall. If possible, select a spot where one of the brackets can be screwed into a wall stud with the #8 screws. Use the wall anchors to attach the other side of the shelf to the wall.
