A pond is a beautiful addition to a yard and can create a restful area of peace and relaxation that attracts birds and wildlife. Here are some steps on how to build your own backyard pond.
Step One: Select the Area for your pond
Select an area for your pond that receives proper sunlight and is in a central location that captures the eye. A pond adds ambiance to any yard and should be in a visible location that receives adequate sunlight for flowers as well as to prevent the growth of algae.
Step Two: Supplies
Stone (decorative: options such as river stone or moss sand stone)
Flowers (Various flowers the water such as: lily pads, water lilies,
Pond Marginal Water Plant and Mares Tail Pond Oxygenating Water Plant/additional flowers and plants can be planted surrounding the pond)Fish (Options such as: gold fish)
Fountain (option that can also be added at a later time)
Step Three: Dig the Hole
Place the garden pond in the area that you have selected and use your shovel to mark around its entire shape. Dig the hole two inches deeper then the depth of the pond (this will allow space for the sand that will be placed in the hole before the pond).
Step Four: Install the Pond
Place the sand within the hole so that there is approximately two inches of sand evenly covering the bottom of the hole. Place the pond within the hole and level the pond.
Fill the pond with water and allow it to acclimate to the temperature of the air before adding the fish. Add the rock around and in the pond as per the desired appearance. Plant the flowers in between the stone as per the directions and then add the fish. Plant some grass or grass seed around the edges of the pond that may have been removed during the digging process. Remove the dirt from the area with the wheel barrow and place it in a flowerbed or use it to build up the area around the pond and plant some flowers along the edge of the pond. You can add a pump if desired along with a fountain or water spray device. Your beautiful fountain will last for many years to come and you can add extra flowers and add to this basic design over time.
