If your dog enjoys spending time outdoors during all seasons, a basic dog house may not be sufficient. An insulated dog house will protect the pooch from medical issues, injury, or even death when outdoor temperatures drop. Follow the instructions below to learn how to build a dog house that will keep your dog warm.
You will need:
• 2×3-foot base panel
• 2×3-foot, 2-inch thick insulated wood side panels
• Slanted panels and shingles for roof, if desired
• Flooring material
• Foam insulation
• Paint or stain
Step 1: Sketch a diagram of the desired dog house with the pencil and paper. Consider special features like an entrance flap or closing door.
Step 2: Use the level to find a flat area in the yard for the dog house. If necessary, move dirt with the shovel to create a flat space. Lay the base panel in this spot. Attach the rear and side wall panels vertically to the base, using the hammer and nails.
Step 3: Add flooring material such as another floor board or carpet that will help insulate the house from cold escaping from the ground.
Step 4: Attach the roof with the hammer and nails. A slanted style will help skim off snow or water that may build up and damage the structure. It also provides more room for the dog to maneuver inside the house. If desired, lay shingles on this roof.
Step 5: Use the foam insulation to seal any areas that are exposed. To create a more attractive appearance, sand the foam down with the sandpaper. The insulation will protect areas of the dog house from the outside environment.
Step 6: Paint or stain the dog house to make it more attractive.
