Everyone enjoys gathering outdoors during the warm weather. The backyard is the perfect socializing spot and if your home does not feature a deck, consider constructing a decorative walkway and patio made from concrete. Add a patio dining set, umbrella, and grill and you have an inexpensive entertainment area with access to the garden and flowerbeds.
You will need:
• Fiber-reinforced concrete
• 2×4 boards
• Concrete walkway form (many styles available)
• Liquid cement coloring
• Two 5-gallon buckets
• Cement mixer
• Concrete sealant
• Cement finishing trowel
Step 1: Use the shovel to remove sod from where you will create the walkway and patio, digging down about two inches.
Step 2: Create a border for the walkway and patio by putting the 2x4s along the length of this area.
Step 3: Add liquid cement coloring to 5 gallons of water. Thoroughly mix ingredients.
Step 4: Follow the manufacturer instructions to mix the fiber-reinforced concrete in the cement mixer. Add the water-coloring mixture to the concrete. No wire mesh or rebar is needed since the concrete is fiber-reinforced.
Step 5: Put the concrete walkway form at the beginning of the walkway area. Add concrete to fill it and use the finishing trowel to level and smooth the concrete. Allow this to sit for 4 or 5 minutes and then remove each corner of your form from the concrete carefully.
Step 6: Rotate your form ¼ of the way, creating a different pattern. Add concrete, smooth and level it, remove the form, and turn it ¼ of the way, repeating the process until you have completed the walkway and then the patio.
Step 7: Allow the concrete to dry overnight.
Step 8: Get the clean bucket, add some sand, and pour this over the dried cement. Sweep sand into the gaps between the cement using the broom.
Step 9: Let the concrete cure for a minimum of 28 days. Use a sealant featuring the desired finish to seal the walkway and patio.
