Mother Nature can take her toll on an asphalt driveway, leaving it cracked and worn. Take action before a professional is needed by filling in the cracks and coating the surface with asphalt sealer. This project is easy to do yourself and prolongs the life of the driveway. You will make the neighbors jealous because your driveway will be the nicest in the neighborhood!
You will need:
• Asphalt driveway crack filler
• Asphalt driveway patching compound
• Asphalt driveway sealer
• Asphalt driveway cleaner
• Pressure washer
• Wire brush
• Combination squeegee brush
• Margin trowel
• Five-in-one tool
• Long stir stick or piece of scrap wood
• Painter’s tape
• Hose with spray nozzle
• Push broom
Step 1: Use the hose to spray water onto the driveway to remove dirt and debris.
Step 2: Pour driveway cleaner onto difficult stains and vigorously scrub the area with the wire brush. Rinse the area with the hose.
Step 3: Power wash the entire driveway with a combination of water and driveway cleaner. Follow the manufacturer instructions for mixing, use the low-pressure tip on the power washer, and work in sections.
Step 4: Use the patching compound and margin trowel to fill potential potholes and smooth the area with the trowel. Clean out cracks using the five-in-one tool and sweep away the debris with the push broom. Fill the cracks, using the crack filler and margin trowel, and then smooth with the trowel. This will prevent cracks from expanding. Let the area dry for 24 hours.
Step 5: Check the forecasted weather and do the application when a few consecutive sunny days are predicted. The sealer needs this time to dry. Stir the driveway sealer with the stir stick or scrap wood for several minutes. Tape off areas where the driveway touches other surfaces like sidewalks.
Step 6: Apply the sealer as directed by the manufacturer, using the combination squeegee brush. Work across the driveway in small sections, spreading the sealer in one direction, then another. Do not walk or park on the driveway until it is dry.
