The floor of the garage can be stained by grease and car oil. These substances can be difficult or impossible to remove. If you cannot get these stains off the garage floor, apply a concrete stain to give the area a new look. This will improve the garage floor appearance and provide it with extra protection against future spills and stains.
You will need:
• Concrete etching cleaner
• Bristle brush
• Garden hose
• Paint tray
• Extension handle for paint roller
• Water-resistant paint roller
• Safety glasses
• Shop vacuum
Step 1: Sprinkle some water on the concrete garage floor to test the surface for sealant. Unsealed concrete will quickly absorb water, while water will bead on sealed concrete. If your floor is sealed, it cannot be stained until the sealant has been removed. To remove this sealant, use a chemical product sold by a home improvement store.
Step 2: Use the broom to sweep the garage floor and then use the shop vacuum to vacuum it. Wash the floor with a strong degreaser and rinse it with water from the garden hose. Allow the floor to dry before proceeding.
Step 3: Put on the gloves and the safety glasses and use the etching cleaner to clean your floor. This will remove any dirt that remains and open the concrete pores that could absorb stains. Combine three quarts of fresh water with one quart of etching cleaner in a clean bucket. Dampen the concrete surface with water from the hose. Pour etching mixture onto a 10×10-foot section of the floor and work this into the concrete with the bristle brush. Keep the floor damp and avoid overcleaning it. Use water to rinse the floor and let the area dry for 24 hours.
Step 4: Combine one gallon stain and one pint water in a clean bucket. Attach the paint roller to its extension handle. Use this to apply the mixture to the concrete floor. Work in 3-foot areas, using a paintbrush to coat corner spots. Allow two hours for the stain to dry.
Step 5: Use a cleaned paint roller and paintbrush to apply one coat of stain, undiluted, to the floor. Allow 24 hours before permitting foot traffic and avoid parking on the floor for three days.
